Popface released their debut album Buck in 1995 and followed up with Almost Endless in 1998. Next came their EP Calling Back/Falling Back in 2001 and the album Michele, I Love You in 2002. Their latest album Eleven Pieces Of A Broken Heart is being released in February 2006. Through the years they have released their records on three different labels, and are now finally coming home to their hometown label CCAP for their new album.
Popface has been synonymous with the Norwegian indie scene, or more to the point the shoegazer scene, since they first started in the mid nineties. For many years the band have perfected the balance between loud and quiet, between cascading wall of electric guitars and the gentle whisper of an almost silent acoustic guitar.
On the new album the band has taken a step in a new direction. Instead of searching for the musical climaxes, the band is on a quest for harmony. The indie feeling is still very much there, and you can feel something building up under the beautifully build pop songs, but the wild guitars have been pretty much turned down and the band comes forward as an harmonic unity, building up rhythms and patterns underneath the pop structures. Popface 2006 balances beautifully between their artistic vision and the commercial pop of today.
Stavanger trioen Popface debuterte med albumet “Buck” allerede i 1995. I 1998 ble oppfølgeren “Almost Endless” utgitt på No Guitar Star (Joakim Haugland). Bandet fulgte opp med EP´en “Calling Back / Falling Back” i 2001 og albumet “Michele, I Love You” i 2002 (begge utgitt på Trust Me Records). Mandag 20. februar blir albumet “Eleven Pieces Of A Broken Heart” utgitt av Stavanger selskapet CCAP, som blant annet er kjent fra utgivelser med Thomas Dybdahl, Helldorado, Lano Places, Jackman og andre lokale helter.
Popface har alltid blitt karakterisert som et indie band, et band som befinner seg i det musikalske skjæringspunktet mellom post-rock, shoegazer og indie-pop. Bandet har blitt sammenlignet med og lar seg inspirere av tidlige utgitte band på Creation Records.
De siste par årene har Popface bevisst staket ut en kurs som beveger seg vekk fra den støy/stille og stygg/vakker dynamikken som de tidligere har perfeksjonert. Bandet har omfavnet et mer harmonisk og atmosfærisk popunivers. Gitarene er fremdeles toneangivende i lydbildet og er ofte melodibærerne i poplåtene, men de store støy utskeielsen er tonet ned. I stedet trer det frem et knippe vakre og vemodige poplåter som svever inn i øregangene til lytterne. De viser en modenhet i den musikalske uttrykket som kler bandet godt.
Popface anno 2006 står frem som et sterkt pop band, der de balanserer vakkert mellom det kunstneriske og kommersielle i sjangeren “Art Pop”.
